Two main attractions of the area are the historic town of Tomar to the west and River Zézere (and the lake Castelo do Bode) to the east of the camping. The nearest town of Tomar was founded in 1157 by Gualdim Pais, the first Grand Master of the Knights of the Templar of Portugal. The Convento do Cristo (a World Heritage site) and castle are situated on a steep hill with beautiful views overlooking the town. In the town itself the Praça da Republica, the church of São João Baptista and the country’s oldest synagogue are worth visiting. Tomar has modern shops, discos, bowling alley, cinema, good restaurants and hotels. There is a daily food market plus a large general market on Fridays. There is ample parking at the market, except on Friday, and in front of the station. 2008 Richard Tulloch's article Castelo do Bode is an artificial lake on the River Zézere, which has been created along the river to provide a reliable supply of clean water for Lisbon and surrounding towns. It has a surface of some 50 sq.km and is ideal for swimming, boating and other water sports. Boat trips on the river are available in the summer season. Further afield, beyond Tomar are the towns of Fatima, Batalha and Alcobaça and the city of Coimbra each with their own rich cultural history, going back to Roman times as witnessed by excavations in Conimbriga. A day to the Beach is easily possible. The well known resort and marina of Nazaré is only 85km away, but the smaller town of São Pedro de Moel and the sheltered bay of São Martinho do Porto are also well worth a visit.
